Who We Are: The Rochester & Genesee Valley Area Labor Federation, AFL-CIO is the regional body for the International AFL-CIO. As such, we are a federation of over 70 affiliated unions that represent over 70,000 members across 11 counties in the Finger Lakes Region of New York State. We support our member-unions in their individual fights and collaborate to help raise the profile of the Labor Movement through political activity, community alliances, labor education and more.
Pay and Benefits: This position is protected by a union contract with the Office and Professional Employees International Union Local 153.
- Salary: $66,800 with regular annual raises.
- Health Premiums paid at 85% to single-coverage plan or similar amount for family-coverage plan.
- 5% contribution to 401k.

- Flexible schedule, can work from home or office except for critical meetings.
Duties and Responsibilities: The Chief of Staff is the senior staff person for the organization and responsible programming across the various areas of interest for the Area Labor Federation. This means:
- Responsible for all aspects of labor and community outreach, serving as labor liaison to community-based coalitions with social justice agendas
- Coordinate labor-themed community special events, e.g., Workers Memorial Day, Labor Day, etc.
- Set up regularly scheduled meetings, arrange all logistics, venue, food and beverage, print materials, agenda development and publicity.
- Coordinate media relations, serving as spokesperson as needed
- Update/maintain e-activist database, RGVALF website, weekly e-mail newsletter, and Action Network; coordinate RGVALF social media presence.
- Work with Administrative Assistant to maintain general fiscal and accounting functions by managing and reconciling accounts payable/receivable and bank accounts; maintain general ledger; serve as liaison to banks, financial auditors, payroll auditors, NYS and National AFL-CIO
- Prepare and monitor financial and budget reports as required
- Organize and implement political mobilization efforts of the RGVALF
- Assist with development of member mobilization and young leader development strategies
- Supporting volunteer activities of Central Labor Councils and various committees
- Supervise other RGVALF staff
Qualifications:
- 2-5 years of experience in organizing, labor representation and/or political campaign work in labor or community organizations preferred
- Extensive knowledge of the labor movement, history and current activities.
- Excellent interpersonal skills; ability to inspire activity from a diverse set of local leaders and affiliate members
- Ability to lead teams and work independently, prioritize and manage multiple responsibilities without daily supervision
- Excellent writing and speaking/listening skills including familiarity with electronic and social media, e.g., Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc.
- Demonstrated computer skills and knowledge of specialized software programs including Microsoft Office, QuickBooks and LaborKey.
- Bachelor’s degree or related work experience
- Applicants must be willing to work evenings and weekends. Position requires regional traveling. Vehicle and valid NYS Drivers License are required.
